Healthy Eating at School

SWEETS AT SCHOOL

I’m sure you’re all aware of the issues around sugar in children’s diet and the effect on their health. As parents you make the majority of decisions about what children eat and as responsible parents you will keep track of the nutritional value of the food provided - especially in the lunchbox.

As a school we:

  • Encourage healthy eating

  • Are a water-only school

  • Teach healthy eating through the curriculum

From time to time teachers will provide ‘sweet treats’ but we are mindful that we don’t do this too often. Recently there has been an increase in children who are celebrating their birthdays bringing in lollipops or other sweet treats to share with their classmates.

Without wanting to be the fun police we won’t be allowing this in the future because:

  • As a school we are required to promote healthy eating

  • Some parents may not wish their children to receive lollies

  • Of possible issues around allergies and health

  • Of potential issues around peer pressure or competition

However, from time to time, there may be some situations that require flexibility in this position and they can be worked through with the teachers in advance.
