Is your child playing Fortnite?

Alli Williams —

Fortnite is R13+ and therefore not appropriate for our ākonga | students.

Violence is a central focus of Fortnite; the main goal is to amass weapons and kill other players. The R13+ rating reflects this violent content and suggests it may not be appropriate for younger children.

While there is no profanity or crude language in the game itself, because of the open chat feature, your child may be exposed to inappropriate language from other players.

The multiplayer platform means there is also the potential for online interactions with strangers which increases the risk of your child being exposed to harassment or bullying, and to online predators.

We are dealing with an increasing number of ākonga | students using inappropriate words towards their peers, including the 'N' word, and Fortnite often comes up in conversation when we investigate where they are hearing this language.

We would appreciate whānau talking to their tamariki | children about the inappropriate nature of insulting name calling, particularly the use of racial abuse, as this will reinforce the messages kaiako | teachers are giving in class.

Please help us to keep all our ākonga | students safe and to uphold our school values of Aroha, Respect and Togetherness.
