Taste tester of the new Kōtuku Gazette - 'The Chirp'!

Nicole Gloag - April 3, 2023

Welcome to our new Kōtuku Gazette called 'The Chirp'. The students will be in charge of producing this every fortnight. And to introduce this, we decided to use our incredible Waka on Avon trip in Week 8 as the opener!

Last week the Kōtuku team went on an incredible journey down the Avon River in a Waka. We travelled by bus to the Christchurch city centre, to the Waka on Avon premises located near Victoria Square. As part of the experience, students learned all about the early history of Ōtautahi, the importance of our awa, Otakaro (Avon River), our land and our people.

This was taught to us by our guides as we paddled waka up and down the Otakaro, as well as teaching us the tikanga and protocols of paddling a waka. The beautiful weather, the exercise of paddling the waka, and learning more about our place, Otautahi, made for a fantastic day. Teachers all got to go in the Waka too, even Mr T and Mr M joined in the fun!!

While one class was at the Waka on Avon, their buddy class enjoyed the awesome facilities at the Margaret Mahy Playground. A HUGE thank you to our incredible parent helpers, we can't do any of this without you!

Kōtuku 2023

The Kōtuku team looks very different this year.  Although part of a full Primary School, the Kōtuku team runs more like an Intermediate with regular trips, Technology classes (including Food Tech, Hard Materials, Music, Drama, and design), languages, amazing sporting and varied leadership opportunities.

As well as these learning experiences, we work alongside, teach and mentor younger students, making us unlike Intermediate schools. We are making the most of the unique position we are in, and continue to strive toward giving our senior students more of a leadership role within the school.
