Room 3 & 12's Beeswax Wraps!

Aysha Young —

On Wednesday Room 3 went over to their buddy class, Room 12, to make some amazing beeswax wraps!

Beeswax wraps are reusable just by rinsing them with cold water, they're an amazing way to wrap up something for your lunch such as biscuits or fruit slices, instead of glad wrap that you just use and throw away.  Mrs H explained this and the process of how to make them while everyone listened eagerly.

Colouring

While the other children waited, they chose a colouring page  from the teachers to colour in until it was their turn to make the beeswax wrap. Each buddy worked on a colouring page together. There were four options to choose to colour - a light bulb with different patterns coming away from the light bulb like rays, a recycling symbol with all sorts of patterns on each part, there was a page with flowers to colour in, and also a page with trees and a little owl hiding inside a hollow part of the tree.

Four buddies sat around a table and chose the little square of fabric they desired. They then wrote the younger buddy’s name on the corner of it using a vivid.

When grating the beeswax, one buddy would hold the grater still while the other grated the beeswax. The buddies grated the beeswax straight onto the fabric, and once they had enough, it was spread all over the fabric. The children found that it smelled like honey!

Carefully the buddies carried their fabric and beeswax, making sure not to spill it, up to Mrs H. It was quite a tricky task, since the two had to carry their fabric on a sheet of baking paper without spilling the beeswax gratings. Mrs H then placed another sheet of baking paper on top of the beeswax and pressed an extremely hot iron on top of the sheets so the gratings would melt. When the ironing process had finished, Mrs H laid the beeswax covered fabric to the side so it was able to cool down.

Each buddy had a great time making the beeswax wrap with each other and helping one another.
