Room 11's Friday Art

Brett Morell —

Every Friday this term Room 11 have been doing art.

The Day Of The Dead Masks

In Room 11 every Friday we do art. This term we have been making Day of the Dead skulls. Day of the dead or dia de los Muertos is when some countries celebrate their dead ancestors. They put lot’s of things around like traditional food, flowers and lots of other stuff.  Room 11 started making theses masks every Friday.  We started by doing a template practicing designing a Day of the Dead skull, which took a lot of effort.  Then we started actually building the skull by gluing a sheet of paper of a skull onto a piece of cardboard.  The next Friday after they dried we had paper clay, which felt really weird but it was just some soaked toilet paper, gib and glue, but first we had to rip the toilet paper so it would actually work then we put the rest of the stuff in. Right after that we molded it to make sure it looks like a skull and we let it dry throughout the week until Friday.

After that, we had to repeat it again so it would be strong and to try to make it 3D.  They all looked amazing. The next Friday we started to do some painting but before that we put some gib on to make it really strong and smooth.  It didn’t take long for the gib to dry so we also got to do a lot of details.  We then had to make it extra smooth before we could paint it so we grabbed sandpaper and scrapped it.  Now it was time to paint it.   We didn’t fully paint it, we only did the detail, but they all looked really awesome.  The following Friday which was the 8th of November we painted them fully and they all look awesome with different colors and everything.  This has taken us a whole term and it was worth it, this activity was really fun.  If you wanted to do this you could ask your teacher if you could or your parents.  Here are some photos of them.
