What's been happening in Pukeko Parua this Week?
What an amazing week it has been, loaded with fun learning activities! Well done to R8 and R9 children for taking to their new rooms (R12 and 13) like ducks to water.
Our Maths focus this week has been on subtraction. The children have got really skilled at deciding which workshops they want to opt into to suit their individual learning needs. To do this they use their Chromebooks to independently follow our slides and watch the videos then sign up for two areas they need to explore. What great 21st century learning!
In P.E. we have been playing Invasion games. Each game has its own set of skills.
The highlight of this week has been our Science investigations. We have been learning about states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. Who would have thought our kids would get so excited about watching a jug boil to see the steam rising. It just shows how many of our everyday activities go unnoticed.
Some of our senior students took initiative and demonstrated the power of peer teaching, by introducing the younger children to experiments that demonstrated reactions. We watched pebble lollies dissolving into swirls of rainbow colours and a bottle of coke exploding like a geyser when Mentos lollies were added to it. That one set off a huge cheer from the excited audience.
Congratulations to the boys I witnessed running our lesson ( Lincoln and Ryan). They confidently presented their experiments in an exciting and animated fashion. The interactions between the peer groups was a delight to see.
For me the highlight of the week was hearing the questions being formulated by the kids. This little gem had us all running to our devices to find out the answer:
Peyton ( R12 ) " Mrs. Ruiter, is fire a liquid, a gas or a solid?"
So if you don't know the answer you might like to become Scientists too and look this up for yourselves!
Have a great weekend with your awesome kids!
