First aid with St John!
The Kōtuku students completed a first aid module with St John.
Our students learned how to respond in a medical event, performed CPR on a mannequin, practiced putting each other in the recovery position and also learned about multiple different medical events like cardiac arrest, stroke, burns and dressing bleeding wounds. This was great timing with also the staff first aid course next Friday!
The biggest take away was the acronym; DRSABCD
Dangers - Check the surrounding dangers/hazards
Responsive - Check if the patient is responsive
Send for help - call 111
Airway - check that the airway isn't blocked
Breathing - Check if they're breathing
CPR/Resuscitation - perform compressions
Defibrilator - Get a bystander to source the closest Defibrillator
They then also learned about an app you can download, that shows where all of the closest defibrillators are. We have one in our office and there are others close by in the community! Important takeaway for not only the students but our community.
