Calligraphy Club

Eva McCloskey —

Calligraphy Club is offered for our Year 7-8 students each Friday lunchtime.

Since the beginning of this year, a group of dedicated Year 7-8 students have been meeting in the Art room each week to learn calligraphy. We have special calligraphy pens, and some models of different fonts for the students to work off.

Students have had a few different projects to work on, such as designing cards for whānau or friends, creating ampersand art, or working on their drop caps. Drop caps are the large letters that begin a text, that are much more elaborate than the others, and often contain pictures within the letter.

We have just acquired a calligraphy workbook with more advanced fonts, which the students are excited to begin working from. Our future projects include using dip-pens, and trying out using gold foil to embellish letters.

Well done to all our calligraphy students for breathing new life into an ancient art.
