Ahakoa He Iti, He Pounamu!
Although it is small, it is precious!
This Term the Kererū Pārua has been learning about pounamu as part of the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum. We have learnt a lot about the cultural significance of pounamu, its uses and its importance as a means of trade.
We also finished our woven landscapes and then created clay pounamu sculptures which we painted and hung over the top. Learning about the different shapes and what they meant was really important; we had to make sure we chose one that meant something to us.
Archer: It was fun beacuse we learnt lots of things, like pounamu actually comes in lots of colours, not just green.
Jess: It was interesting finding out about all the ways you can carve pounamu and the meanings behind the shapes.
Lizzy: It was cool to learn about some of New Zealand's history and background.
Islah: It was fun learning about another culture.
Tyler: I loved how we were learning more about our culture and what pounamu is.
