Kererū Team Climate Activists
Over the last couple of weeks, the Kereru team have been focusing on Global warming.
We have been learning what the main causes of global warming are, how it will impact our world in the future as well as what we can do to better protect our planet. Students have been learning about the impact that human activity has had on our planet over the last 100 years including the use of fossil fuels, deforestation, overproduction/consumption, and overuse of plastic. Students voice what they are going to do to support climate change but also about how they can stand up and have an impact on our future going forward.
A focus that we have had this week was the plastic pollution problem that we have in our oceans. Did you know that there is more marine life than people? Plastic is a very useful material but unfortunately is very hard to get rid of. Plastic ends up in our ocean and is often mistaken as food by many sea creatures and causes harm when swallowed. Sea animals such as prawns and fish eat micro pieces of plastic that end up being eaten by us!
To send a message about the plastic that ends up in our oceans the Kererū team made sea creatures from recycled materials. The students used materials such as empty milk bottles, cardboard and bread bags. These sea creatures show the harm that we are causing to our ocean animals. Next week we will focus on writing a letter to someone explaining how they can reduce their environmental impact.
Some of the actions members of the Kererū team are going to take to reduce their impact on the environment:
"I am going to start scootering to school more instead of driving." Ruby
"In the future I am going to buy an electric car." Brody
"I am going to turn off electricity in my house if I am not using it." Noah C
"I will have a meatless meal each week." Izzy
"I will bike or scooter to school instead of driving." Millie
"I'm not going to buy anything with palm oil in it." Loek
