Mili mili, patia!

Tagan Stringer —

Samoan language week took flight in Piwakawaka.

This week to celebrate the Samoan culture, Seira lead a Sāsā dance lesson with the help of four amazing leaders. Sāsā is a cultural Samoan dance involving high energy and synchronized movements. It is generally performed sitting down and the actions usually express day to day activities. To warm up our listening ears, we had lot's of fun playing "Fai lenei" (do this), "Fai lena" (do that), a spin off of Simon says do this.

When our brains were switched on, it was time to Sāsā!

"Miri" means to rub. Our action for this was to rub our hands together. "Patia" means to clap and our action was to clap once. "Lua patia" means to clap twice. "Tolu tolu fa", we altogether clapped 3 times. The enthusiasm and energy was awesome to witness.

Our tamariki learnt a few more actions to finish their Sāsā morning. All in all, a great way to celebrate such a beautiful culture as well as embracing one of our school values, Kotahitanga.
