Kererū Kaitiaki Group

Connie Palmer —

Native tree plantings, soil delivery and more this week!

This week has been a big week for the Kererū Kaitiaki Group! We are currently growing a large amount of native trees and plants as part of the Eco-Action Nursery program. These plants will then be used to help regenerate native bush in the red zone and help sustain our native birds. We have also planted some of these plants around our school in order to help support the native birds in our area. The group planted kowhai, mingimingi, harakeke and rohutu behind our new scooter track. They also planted harakeke along the newly painted grey fence along from Kōtuku to hopefully help with the soggy patches there during the winter time.

We also received a donation from Bunnings of two pallets worth of potting mix to fill our two new garden beds. The Kaitiaki group spent an afternoon lugging bag after bag to the garden beds and emptying the dirt into the beds ready for planting with vegie plants next week.  It was hard work but really worth it! Thank you once again Bunnings for all of your support.

Keep an eye out around the school for some more native tree plantings as we will continue to plant up along our fence lines with native plants.

Part of the Kererū Kaitiaki Group will also be visiting the New Brighton Community Gardens for an afternoon on the 31st of May to gather further inspiration on how we can best use our wonderful new vegie garden beds.
