It Is Rocket Science!

Rhian Beddow —

This term Pukeko students have started to learn about the science behind Rocketships.

After exploring space last term, in Pukeko we have been diving deeper into space exploration aircrafts. During interchange students have been taking on the difficult concept of forces and motion.

In week 1 students learnt the components of a rocketship and got to design their very own ones. This week they looked at the forces of thrust, lift, drag and weight in both spaceships and airplanes, followed by a fun paperplane building activity where we saw a bunch of different designs!

The Science Alive - Kids in Space programme has also been visiting our school, with room 5 in week 1, room 6 and 12 in week 2, and room 13 will get the pleasure in week 3. In this programme students got to watch videos from real Astronauts (while wearing their very own spacesuits), looking at the effects of gravity on everyday life tasks. They also got to look at the Mars Rover Exploration mission.

Students have also been fostering their curiousity about space, through writing information reports based on their independent research on the Planets, Sun and Moon.
