Our special places

Jared Kelly —

We have a lots of places around our school that are special - and some that super extra special!

The Jacky Seat

You will hear us refer to the smaller wooden seat in the middle of the quad as the ‘Jacky seat’.  It used to live outside Room 5 when we were still at Waikuku School.

But why is it called that? Who is Jacky?

Jacky was a parent with a huge passion for our school.  She is pictured in early press cuttings about the ‘proposed school for Pegasus’ back when we were still based at what is now The Old School Collective in Waikuku.

At the time, Jacky was chair of our Board of Trustees, and mother to two children at our school. Apart from her work on the BOT, Jacky was well known in the community as a person that really cared about people, adults and children.

Tragically Jacky died in February 2010. The BOT wanted the school to have something to remember her by, and the Jacky seat was bought by them. It embodies lots of her qualities - it’s a one-off design, solid, natural, strong, a safe place to sit - and most importantly - it is fun!

Jacky would have been so pleased that it is now the place that we encourage children to go to if they're looking for friends to play with.

Next to the Jacky seat is a larger wooden seat that was purchased as part of our 140-year anniversary celebrations back in 2013 - a gift from our old Waikuku School to our new Pegasus Bay School!

The Waikuku School Seat

This is the seat on the end of Maungatere that looks towards Mt Grey (Maungatere) and to the tyre playground.

This seat was commissioned by the team who organized our 140-year Anniversary Celebrations in 2013. It is the school sign that used to be at the front of Waikuku School, set into the wooden seat.

The Kaitiaki Sign

This is the sign that you see set into the wetlands area by the bridge. This was created by the Year 8 children who were with us in 2014 - the year we moved from Waikuku to Pegasus. It has the names of all the students who were at our school at that time.

There were only 260 of us then!

Oak Tree

When we were at Waikuku School, we had a small country school vibe, and we used to have our assemblies outside under the oak trees whenever the weather was fine (you can sit out under these trees today - if you visit The Old School Collective).  The oak tree and the plaque in front of it at Pegasus Bay is a reminder of those times.

Reflection Seat

You'll see this bench seat just behind the Oak Tree, and it's set into concrete with some names and handprints in the concrete.  This seat is a place to sit and remember those who have been with us on our learning journey, but who are no longer with us.

Jacob Yikes mural

This was commissioned in 2018 and was completed during our community Matariki Celebrations that year.

As we continue to grow, we will have other special places at our school, new memories and new legacy projects left by our Year 8 tamariki.

Whilst we always ask our students to be kaitiaki of themselves and our place, taking care of the extra special places is something that we really appreciate.

Regards, Jared
