Peka peka!
Being courageous as we competed with MC and the Middles in Net and Wall games, taking on a tuakana role in Te reo Māori, and around the world we went, as we explored what schooling is like in Korea, Malaysia, and South Africa...
A top team effort for Week 7 was had here in Peka peka. First, we taught the middles how to play Bombardment and Bounce ball, and we must say we were rather competitive despite there being 4 years difference in age! The kaiako were super impressed at our tamariki ability to throw, catch and apply strategy to work together as a team to score points. MC had interesting defensive skills, some might say it was cheating, as he and his team had to fight to secure the win against Whaea Sally's homeroom.
Equally impressive was our kupu Ako manga (classroom objects in te reo Māori). We took on a leadership role as we shared our designated kupu for year 1 with Elliot Anderson acting as the kaiako (teacher) saying the words first as they appeared on the slideshow for the middles to repeat. We then paired up with a Year 4 or 5 student and had a crack at Miss Paterson's Kahoot (digital quiz). Thank you to MC and his team for supporting this fun afternoon where we could celebrate the end of our Net and Wall unit and build relationships across our Kura!
Our "Over the fence" inquiry to explore overseas schooling shifted another gear as we jumped on a plane to head to Korea, Malaysia, and South Africa. We invited our whānau in to share with the tamariki what it was like to go to school in their country of birth. The children were given the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the cultural differences and similarities across the 3 countries. A big thank you to Roy Kim, Rafi Raja, and Michelle Nortje who came in and led a 30 min session with our tamariki.
Next Tuesday we have Marian Smith taking us to Scotland and Jeanette van der Merwe to come and share another perspective of schooling in South Africa. We have loved having whānau in our space and being a big part of our curriculum delivery, giving it an accurate and personal perspective.
PE: Next week we start our new Athletics unit, where we will explicitly teach the tamariki the 3 Athletic disciplines of Run, Jump and Throw. Please ensure your tamaiti has good running shoes to wear on Mondays and Wednesdays until the end of the term.
A big thank you to Rupert Bool (Hugo's dad) who has shared his expertise to get the field marked out for our little Athletes to master running between the lines sooner rather than later! Such a legend, who we are so lucky to have in our community!
Important dates:
Lego day: The house of bricks is here at Pegasus Bay next Friday (16th September) bringing 1000s of bricks for the tamariki to be little creators! Cost for this fundraiser is $5 per child for an hour and a half of fun! Please put $5 in a envelope with your child's name and Peka peka.
End of Term whānau morning to celebrate our learning: On Friday the 30th of September we will hold another Whānau morning where tamariki will share their learning with you. To celebrate our inquiry "Over the Fence" we ask that you bring a plate of kai that is reflective of your culture to share for morning tea. We will be serving tea and coffee again and hopefully we can get some parents to take a PE session again or perhaps have a Mums vs Dads running race on our new track!
Beach ED: This is going to be held in the last week of Term 4 (Tuesday the 13th and Thursday the 15th of December). However, we need to have a certain number of parent support in order for this to happen. If you are able to help out on one of these days please email sallypatterson@pegasusbay.school.nz ASAP. We need 12 parents each day please.
Teamwork makes the dream work...bring on Week 8!
