Ali Hornblow —

We can not believe how quickly this term is going by! We are busy preparing for the end of the term and important key dates for the rest of the year, so make sure you put reminders into your calendar. If this term is anything to go by, I know the rest of the year will fly by.

Thank you to our whānau who attended the KHS coffee and cake evening this week. It was really good to meet the Principal, Jason Reid, and there were some really good questions asked by parents and students.

Inquiry: Ngā tamariki are now very much managing their work to ensure that all their work expectations for their inquiry of their intrepid adventurer is ready to be uploaded for marking on Friday next week (week 9). These will be marked and then approved on Seesaw so you can then view your child’s amazing hard work.

Part of the inquiry process allows the tamariki to reflect and evaluate on what they have been learning, which then informs them in developing new questions to continue their learning. To support this process, week 10 will be dedicated to your child delving deeper into their chosen intrepid adventurer or something else that has come out of their inquiry. It does take sometime for some to decide on what to delve deeper into and to facilitate this we would appreciate it if you could have a kōrero (discussion) with your child to help them come up with an idea. We will also be doing this in class as well, but sometimes more heads are better than one.

Maths: We have finished our unit of Algebra and we were so blown away with the progress in our tamariki and their learning. We have now started our unit of Area, Perimeter and Volume this week. We have set an activity for your child to complete, when they have completed their work in their math classes. This activity invites students to draw a floor plan of their bedroom currently. They will then use their learning of area and perimeter to re-design their room however they choose. They will use this information to work out how much paint/wallpaper they need, curtain fabric, flooring and any extras they decide on. This will allow them to see how area and perimeter are applied to real life situations.

Restaurants: We are nearly open for business! We have been impressed with the group work that ngā tamariki have shown this week as they plan the finer details of their restaurant. We are seeing some fantastic communication, delegation, and negotiation going on.

Later this afternoon, you will receive an invitation to your child’s restaurant. Each restaurant can hold 24 diners, so it will be first in, first served, so make sure you RSVP. Each restaurant has decided on their chosen charity for the profits of their restaurant to go to. There is no set pricing for the meal, it will be pay what you think the meal and service is worth. If you are unable to attend, but you have other family or friends that you think may like to dine at one of Pegasus Bay’s finest cuisines then please RSVP.

X Factor: This is coming up early next term and is a wonderful opportunity for your child to showcase a special talent of theirs. Once again, have a kōrero (discussion) with your child. It is a whole school event and is very popular. Due to covid we were unable to hold this last year, so being year 8 your child may like to take up their last opportunity at this.

Winter Sports Tournament in Christchurch: Congratulations to the three teams that qualified for this tournament at the end of last term. Our football, netball and rugby teams competed in this competition yesterday. The football and netball teams had mixed results and the rugby team made it into the final against Clearview. At full time the scores were equal, in extra time Clearview scored to take the win. This is a great result as there were a lot of teams from all over Canterbury. Thank you too to the parents and Mr P who travelled with the teams, without you the teams wouldn’t have been able to compete.

Reminders:

KHS Testing: Due to timetabling issues, the dates have changed for this but will still be this term.

Book week: This will be celebrated all of next week. Dress up day is Thursday and Ali, and I are super excited about our costumes.

Sausages: Every Friday, $2 per sausage, this can be paid at the office before Thursday.

Ngā mahi nui,

Ali and Anna.
