Peka peka are progressing!

Sally Patterson —

Using our sounds to build our first words; Mastering AB, ABC, and AAB patterns; Building our Locomotor Strength, and learning about Plants. What a week!

Our tamariki are showing a lot of grit as they move through our Structured Literacy programme! Almost all of our groups have enough sound knowledge to use these sounds to build their first CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant). We have been impressed at the tamariki ability to identify each of the 3 sounds-almost independently when spelling, and their developing fluency to read these words. We are very excited about the rest of the year and where the tamariki will go in their literacy!

In Maths-No Problem! we have just finished our Chapter about Patterns, which the tamariki just loved! They can identify how many units are within a pattern, create both linear and nonlinear patterns, and can fix patterns that have mistakes! Understanding patterns is a foundational concept in Maths, as tamariki that can extend and predict patterns will have a much easier time making connections and seeing relationships in Maths. Our new chapter is focused on Numbers and how numbers are related to Patterns.

In PE we are actively pursuing Athletic greatness as we refine and develop our locomotor skills. We are learning how to run, jog, sidestep, jump with two feet together, hop, skip and bear crawl! This unit is focused on exploring these skills through fun games that develop the ability to work as a team, develop strength and coordination-all things that will help us move into Ball skills for Term 2.  Peka peka is definitely developing a team of Champions!

In Inquiry, we are developing our knowledge about plants-why they are important, and how they grow. This is important, as this weekend we are starting our garden project which has been designed by our budding inventors. Collectively we have decided that we are building a butterfly garden, driftwood hut, and a monster truck stadium. Understanding how plants flourish in our Pegasus environment will ensure our tamariki are Kaitiaki of our place and our garden will last for many years to come.

Week 9 we welcome Priya Raja, Sadie Gilbert, and Thomas Donohue. We are so impressed at how our tamariki have supported our new friends during visits, really demonstrating their understanding of our school value Whanaungatanga. Next week we will continue to gain momentum in all learning areas! Unfortunately due to COVID we will cancel the bake sale with the Year 8s.

Have a lovely weekend, relax, rejuvenate and go on adventures! Stay well!
