Year 4/5 - Welcome Back

Simon Crawford —

Term 3 has arrived.

Monday morning marks the start of our Term 3 learning journey in Taerutu and Nga Tai o Mahaanui.

The teaching team are incredibly excited to get back into things after a refreshing break away.

It is always exciting to have new students start in our ALS, and we are lucky to have Summer start with us on Monday. No doubt she will love her new kura.

Here is a sneak peak at the learning ahead of us:

Global Mondays: we are focussing our learning around the wonderful islands of Japan. Whilst there will be an overarching theme of the Olympics woven into the early weeks of Term 3, we are also going to be investigating the history, art, culture and technological developments of Japan.

Passions: this terms passions have a 'production' flavour to them as we work towards our school production at the end of the term.

Hauora Wednesdays: we have the addition of mindfulness, to go alongside with our cooking, philosophy and healthy living learning.

Inquiry: our theme for this term is 'Navigating the Journey'. This will take us down three different roads; the journey to Te Waipounamu (with a possible field trip), our personal journey and our athletic journey (tying into athletics day at the end of the term). We start in pre 1600's New Zealand as we discover more about the Moa and Haast Eagle through an ambitious art project.

Numeracy and Literacy: will have an Olympic feel, as we dive into Statistics and News Report writing.

Speaking of the Olympics, because I work with three highly competitive homeroom teachers, I have been roped into joining them in the 'Homeroom Olympics'. Each morning there will be a contest amongst homerooms for the daily Gold, Silver, Bronze and Kiwi Bronze (4th). The best team will win, rather than the most athletic tamariki. Monday starts off with the mighty Tug-of-War.

Can't wait for Monday,

Simon, Jen, Ella and Rachel
