Peka peka!

Sally Patterson —

A wonderful week of learning thanks to the warmer weather and the tamariki adapting quickly to our new routines and expectations!

What beautiful weather for Week 2! This allowed us to venture outside for PE and really hone into developing our ball skills and understanding of what being a team means. Next week we will introduce the concept of Net and Wall games-where the objective is to work as a team to score on the side of the opposition. We will carry out rotations where we will explicitly teach our school value of Whanaungatanga and how to work together as a team in the classroom. Then we will explore some basic net and wall games in the Gym. This will allow us to all use the Gym for 30 min rotations on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

MNP: In Maths our tamariki who started in Term 1 and 2 are exploring the concept of Number bonds and developing their ability to image basic facts through explicit instruction. Mrs Wynyard's team of new tamariki are exploring the concept of matching and developing the ability to describe similarities and differences, in order to group objects.

Literacy: Our literacy rotations are working like well-oiled machines, giving tamariki more time for independent practise for new skills that are being taught in their Structured Literacy lesson. We were wondering if there were some parents who might like to volunteer their time and come in to support some of our Stage 1 tamariki as they tackle the concept of rotations during our middle block. If you are interested can you please get in touch with Sally at: sallypatterson@pegasusbay.school.nz

Mrs Wynyard's tamariki started their Structured Literacy lessons this week with a big focus on phonological awareness and introducing their first letter: Mm-exploring the letter name, the sound it makes and how to write it.

Inquiry: This week we began looking at the differences in schooling in NZ after we revisited our Peka peka treaty and understanding why we have rules and values we aspire to. We are reconnecting with Woody and Barnaby next week as they settle in their new surroundings overseas. We are exploring the differences and similarities of where they are compared to here in New Zealand. This will be done through videos that the boys are making and sharing with us. We will then teach where in the world they actually are before examining Education 'over the Fence'.

Buddies: Our Buddy Programme officially started last week and will be held weekly on Friday afternoons. This has been delayed due to COVID restrictions over the last 2 years. The intention of this programme is to develop relationship and communication skills that are needed to build leadership skills for our Year 8 and it's the opportunity for our tamariki to develop confidence and communication with tamariki who are older than them. Our first few weeks are focused on getting to know you, where the tamariki are designing and developing a digital book all about each other. This will be shared with you on Seesaw in week 5.

Next week we will have Hugo Bool and Izah Pauro visiting our space. We are excited to support these two as they transition into Peka peka. It is so wonderful to see our older tamariki step up and support our new tamariki as they start school.

Beach Ed: Beach Education has been booked for us on the 13th and 15th of December and will be held at Waikuku beach. This is where the tamariki are taught about Beach safety by our amazing NZ Lifeguards at Waikuku. There will be a small cost for this amazing opportunity and this will be added to your account. Being at the end of the year it is important to pay this as soon as possible. We will be thinking of fundraising ideas to make this cheaper. We will also need some parent help due to being at the beach and going into the water. If you would like to attend and support us, please organise time off work now and email sally at: sallypatterson@pegasusbay.school.nz

IMPORTANT NOTICES:

-Please remember drink bottles each day as our drinking fountains are turned off.

-When transitioning or picking up your child early for appointments please ensure you sign your child in and out at the office. This is to ensure we know who is here and who isn't in case of an emergency.

-Hot food: In Terms 2 and 3 on Monday-Thursday, we can heat food for your child's kai. Please put the item of food that is to be reheated (not cooked) in tinfoil and ensure it is named into the tray on the bench each day. NB: cheese sticks to tinfoil so please wrap in baking paper first for cheesy items. No hot food on Friday-we want to support the Year 8 Sausage sizzle!

-Masks indoors. Please remember to wear masks indoors at all times. Refer to the COVID notice for more information about school expectations.

-Library will be on Mondays. Please ensure library books are in your child's bag each Monday morning please.

-NO Toys NO exception. Please ensure your child is not bringing toys to school.

-Fridays we do Poetry, so please make sure your child's Poetry book is in their bag. It is the green 1A8 book.

Have a wonderful week and we look forward to seeing you in Week 3!
