Extra-curricular activities available during the school day

Jared Kelly —

Kia ora e te whānau

We have a number of extracurricular activities available for students to commit to during the year. These are purely voluntary and provide students with new experiences and opportunities to work with other teachers, adults and other school pupils.

You will usually be advised via the weekly newsletter about opportunities, and there will be a registration form to complete to sign up.

Kura Reo

Whaea Sonya runs our kura reo programme on a Friday morning during our literacy block, with separate sessions for Junior and Senior students between 10.45 -12.45 am.

Kapa Haka

Our kapa haka is split into Junior and Senior groups, and they meet every Friday afternoon with Whaea Sonya and Miss Matthews.

Through waiata and dance, students learn several items that are performed at the kapa haka festival later in the year, and at some of our school community events.

Friday Winter Sport Competition

This is for our Year 5-8 students and it runs in term 2 every Friday from 12 noon for 6 weeks.  Events include football, netball, hockey and rugby.  Parent support in the form of coaching and managing teams is appreciated.

Choir

Our school choir is for Year 4-8 students and it once up and running, they have regular practices. The choir performs at several events throughout the year, both during school time and in the evening.

Music, dance, skate and surf lessons

These lessons are offered by Nolan and the team at Christchurch School of Rock.  Lessons are on a Friday, and they take place across the day (including break times).  See the separate article in last weeks newsletter for more information and registration details.

Things to keep in mind when signing up to extra-curricular activities:

Some of the extra-curricular activities are free, and some incur a charge that needs to be paid before the event / lessons start (e.g. winter sports, music, skate and dance lessons).

Lessons take place during learning time, and it's not practically or logistically possible for teachers to provide extra teaching time to 'catch up' those students who were absent from class due to an extra-curricular lesson.

Please consider how many extra activities during learning time you sign your child up for, and what impact this may have on their learning progress.

Attendance at some activities is a privilege and not a right, and if the teachers believe that your child is not engaged, or is disruptive they may be asked to leave.
