Recycling
At Te Kura o Manga Kawari one of our values is kaitiaki. A kaitiaki is a person, group or being that acts as a carer, guardian, protector and conserver.
All our tamariki strive to use our school values in a positive way. We all show kaitiaki at our kura everyday by reducing or recycling our rubbish and by making sure we don’t drop rubbish in the school grounds! It’s important to us that we make an effort to reduce rubbish going to landfill.
In each ALS we have a poster to remind us of our recycling rules-
Paper should be bigger than a DLE? envelope.
We can only recycle clean plastics #1, #2, #5
Every afternoon our dedicated recycling team checks all the recycling bins in each ALS to make sure that the poster guidelines are being met. At the end of the week the ALS with the least amount of non-recyclable rubbish gets the trophy (with sweet treats).
What can you do at home?
Did you know that empty toilet rolls cannot go in the yellow bin. They are just not big enough… because…. any paper/cardboard pieces smaller than the DLE envelope (225 x 114mm) will confuse the sorting machine. But the great news is they can go in the green organics bin!
In the Waimakariri District our yellow (recycling) bin is for CLEAN-
flattened cardboard and paper (larger than a DLE envelope 225x114mm)
plastics #1 #2 #5 (without lids, NOT flattened)
glass bottles and jars (without lids)
aluminium cans and tins (without lids, NOT crushed)
No lids= NO LIDS. Not only bottle tops, also jar tops, takeaway container lids. ALL lids go in the rubbish (red bin).
Soft Plastics= plastic that can be scrunched (ie. plastic bread bags, chip bags, biscuit trays) can be recycled. You’ll need to have a dedicated extra bag to store these items as they go into the Soft Plastics Recycling bin at a depot.
Check: https://www.recycling.kiwi.nz/ to learn more about recycling soft plastic and store locations to drop off the soft plastics. The nearest depots for us in Pegasus to drop off soft plastic packaging are in Rangiora at The Warehouse, Rangiora New World and Countdown.
Let’s all put our learning into action and let’s all be kaitiaki in our daily lives. Ask your ākonga (learner) to help you.
It may take an extra moment to set up and remember these points so please make time to put your rubbish in the right places at your home.
