Pegasus Bay Home Learning

Jared Kelly —

Kia ora whānau, welcome to Pegasus Bay home learning 2.0. Our approach to home learning was well received by our community last lockdown, so we're keeping the same model. The following article outlines everything you need to know about home learning at levels 3 and 4.

This is our plan for home learning which will kick into action from Monday 23rd August.

What can you expect from the ALS team your child is or children are in? The teams have worked hard to pull together some great content that will support the maintenance of your child’s learning.

We will provide learning that is easy for parents to support and for students to complete successfully but with a little bit of challenge.

It is important that you break the day up with some learning time, some downtime, and some active time. There is no need to spend hours doing school work. 30 minute chunks throughout the day is fine in amongst other things you might do at home. Lego challenges, exercise activities, cooking. A mixture of activities will keep the kids interested.

We have 3 layers of home learning that you can engage with, so please read carefully about what you can expect at each layer. You will decide which works best for you and your family. You can flexibly shift between these as it suits. You may also choose to do this some of the time or even not at all. It is completely your choice as to how much you would like to engage with these learning options.

Layer 1: Teacher connected content

On a daily basis, a lead teacher from your child’s ALS, will upload a short video to Seesaw and Hero (this will come to your email) for a 9am viewing. They will briefly talk through the content for that day, some of the key learning that will happen and how you can support your child. This will also include some of the tools you may need.

It is important to note, work can be completed either digitally or non-digitally. If it’s completed in a non-digital way then you’ll need to take a clear photo to share with the homeroom teacher if you want it to be marked. If you have difficulty sending content either by email or on Seesaw, then we’ll look to create a google doc solution, but we’ll keep that on hold for now just to minimise where content is being shared.

You will have received new Seesaw home learning logins for your children today or by tomorrow. Please read this carefully to ensure your child can log in correctly. There is a help guide at the bottom of this article which you may find useful also.  If you have any challenges logging into Seesaw please email your query to roisin@pegasusbay.school.nz and Ms A will be able to sort you out. You don’t need to do anything for the Hero connection, it will go straight to your email.

If emailing work back, this goes to your child’s homeroom teacher. Teacher emails are all here: http://www.pegasusbay.school.nz/our-staff and they follow the format firstnamelastname@pegasusbay.school.nz. (E.g. simoncrawford@pegasusbay.school.nz)

Content for each day will be loaded by 8am. Teachers will usually be checking their email at 9.30am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm to answer any questions or check any work. Our preferred method of sharing is Seesaw, however, if you want to email it to the teacher directly that is fine also.

(Tech note: please use a device that does not have any child access limitations on it as this tends to interfere with students logging into Seesaw. For students in the Middles, the teachers will send access codes directly to you)

Layer 2: Pick ’n’ Mix folder (no teacher marking required)

This is a google folder that has been shared with you and is accessible via the school website under parent information. It has some fun non-level specific activities that you can do at home with your children.

It also has specific ALS folders with activities that are connected to your child’s ALS. The will have a learning context but will be very interactive and hands-on. An example might be a cooking challenge, sketching bugs in the back yard or building the best indoor hut you can.

Layer 3: Parent managed content (no teacher marking required)

Here you are solely responsible for managing the content your children are accessing. We have provided some sites we highly recommend, as they can support your child’s learning well. E-ako and study ladder are awesome!!!

If you are looking to do work with your child here, please do so at their curriculum working level.
