Koru-Learning about whānau

Sally Patterson —

The koru, which is often used in Māori art as a symbol of creation, is based on the shape of an unfurling fern frond. The tamariki explored this concept in an art experience, creating individual representations of their own whānau.

Wow, so much learning in Pekapeka! After examining our own pepeha in week 8, the tamariki will be mastering this until the end of the year. We plan to say our pepeha each day during homeroom with the intention to memorise this and to use this confidently!

Our pepeha provided an opportunity to explore who was in our whānau and this cultivated some wonderful child-led discussions and interest, to explore similarities and differences. This lead to our amazing Koru art! These will be up in the classroom hopefully by the end of the term.

Week 10 sees us continue with our inquiry topic "Navigating the journey".  We will explore traditional gender roles utilizing a child-led inquiry approach to challenge their thinking about social and cultural influences on gender roles.

On Tuesday the middle syndicate are sharing with us the digital books they have created on their devices. The intention was to write a story targeted for our New Entrant/Year 1 year level. Thank you to the kaiako from the middle syndicate for thinking of our tamariki when planning your learning!

Tuesday and Friday bring Pou rotations, which have stimulated great interest and discovery in Te Ao Māori, Digital Technology, Experiential learning, and the Sustainable development goals. It has been great to see the genuine desire to dive into these topics, with great engagement and critical thinking from the tamariki.

Wednesday will see our Pekapeka team planning for an exciting and engaging Term 4! As usual, we will have our superstar relievers in our space led by the fabulous Mrs. Watson!

For PE, we will hold our mini Olympics on Thursday where each homeroom will go head to head in a set of ball skill challenges, tug of war, and relays. This will be a great way to finish our ball skills unit in a competitive but fun way!

As you can see, Week 10 will be action-packed!

Have an amazing weekend team!

Arohanui,

Penny, Amanda, Dan, Sandy, and Sally.
