Numicon in the Outreach Service
Repetition, repetition, repetition!
As many of us already know the key to a lot of children’s, (and adults!) learning is repetition, repetition, repetition!
Finding ways to approach a maths problem repeatedly, whilst retaining interest, can sometimes be tricky. Numicon is a great way to do this, the shapes and numbers become increasingly familiar, we spend a long time talking about, playing with, exploring, identifying, matching and familiarising ourselves with the Numicon pieces, through a variety of sensory, and play based activities, which enables us to work on maths problems in a confident, colourful and interesting way.
Over a number of sessions we have worked with Numicon, firstly making sure that we know the names of the colours and have experienced Numicon previously. Here you can see a few different ways we have worked on our goals: to consolidate previous knowledge of colours, numbers, and counting 1:1, to 10, beginning to identify early teen numbers (11, 12, 13, 14), and number bonds to 10/beginning simple addition.
