Pītau-Allenvale — May 14, 2023

Morgan Mathews-Hale from Kaitiaki Studios has designed a new logo for us.

Over time you will see our new logo being progressively used, however it should be noted that any uniforms with our former logo are welcome to be worn at any time both now and in the future.

The name Pītau reflects the figurehead of a canoe ornamented with perforated spiral carving, and a young succulent shoot of a fern, fern frond, fern shoot.

The new build is located near significant waterways (Ōtūkaikino and Ka Pūtahi) and is named with the figurehead of the canoe in mind, as it is a name of some mana (prestige) and prominence in its co-located environment.

At the time of naming the school, consideration of the way to also name the satellite provisions was made, referring to the locations (Raki = north, Uru = West). This allows the kura name to remain with some differentiation when needed for the satellite provisions at other school sites.

Kia puaki te pitomata - Let the potential be revealed.

This whakatauākī for the kura refers to the pitau of the waka - the carved pitau figurehead that adorns the tauihu of the waka - breaking through the mist over the waterways. This is a figurative expression in keeping with the entire naming theme that follows, and could relate to “unfurling potential” if one were referring to the pitau being the new growth, the unfurling fern frond. This whakataukī is inspired from the whakataukī “Iti noa, he pito mata” - while small, it has potential - referring to how with care, a small kūmara will produce a bountiful harvest. Both of these whakataukī capture the idea of the end result being much greater than the actual investment. This metaphoric expression is intended to reflect the type of education within Pitau-Allenvale, where the individual’s potential can be revealed in their learning journey, much in the way the pitau reveals itself as it breaks through the fogginess of the early morning mist.
