Embracing Change

Sonja Smith —

Transitioning to a new environment and coping with change can be challenging. Students on the Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) experience numerous changes throughout their day. Even small changes e.g. sandwiches instead of crackers for lunch, can cause a big upset.

A successful transition to a new environment or change in routine involves preparation, time, and a good support network.

Some of our students in local schools have a different teacher at short notice, which can be confusing.

Year 8 students moving on to high school next year face an even bigger change in their lives.

Social stories and visits to new environments are important to ensure a smooth transition. Students on the Ongoing Resourcing Scheme need lots of time to adjust and process what "change" will mean for them and their daily schedule.
