Work Experience at Tētēkura is Positively Progressing at a Perfect Pace!

Rebekah Carlsen —

2025 has started off this term and already going strong.

We have a wide variety of work experiences to cover the students preferences and needs.

We have a group of 3 students going to a Hospitality Course at Ara. They are learning cooking skills making hot/cold drinks, food preparation, health and safety in the kitchen, setting tables answer phones etc. Students love going to Ara and this group is no expectation. We also have 2 students doing an Ara Work Skills Course learning valuable skills as well as a Design Course.

We have 2 students going to an Arts Integrated Course also held at Ara. This is a movement to music course where students can express themselves through dance.

Another Group visits the Sensory Room each week to explore the sensory equipment helping them to relax at Pioneer Stadium.

A few students go to Community Public Health where they put to together smoke free and party packs as well as folding and stuffing envelopes.

A new opportunity for work experience this year is at Access Community Public. Students have been doing office work similar to work at CPH. We have heard that the students have been really enjoying their work and shining in their roles.

We have a student starting at Art Metro this term to participate in creating art.

Glenlothian Farm is always a popular choice for work experience. Students rake leaves, dig holes, move hay in wheelbarrows, feed the animals, pick up sticks and pinecones. The favourite job is poop scooping! Sometimes afterwards, the students get to feed the wallabies by hand.

A few students go to Doggy Day Care where they fill the water bowls, play with the dogs and also pick up the poop! Trust me, the farm and DDC are the only experiences when students have to deal with poop and it is their choice!!

We also have students out for a day completing DoE Course (Duke of Edinburgh) participating in various activities in the community.

Overall our Tētēkura students are able to choose from a wide variety of experiences in the community.
