Understanding Our Emotions: The Colour Monster.

Lisa Hanson —

This term in Room 15, we've been learning about our feelings and emotions through "The Colour Monster" book and different "Mood Monsters" resources. By using this emotional language daily, using visuals and working on our collaborative artwork, we aim to help our students regulate themselves and express their feelings.

To ensure that our students become familiar with the language of emotions, we incorporate references to these feelings in our daily conversations. By using phrases like "I can see you are feeling sad" etc, we actively model emotional regulation throughout the day. The use of Google slides during 'circle time' has become a key learning tool for the boys to understand what the emotion is, how we show it and what we can do when we are feeling certain ways.

Our sensory activities, science experiments and art have been linked to "The Colour Monster" story. Repeating the concept and representation of each colour through different classroom activities has solidified the learning.
