The Importance of Routine During Times of Change

Sonja Smith —

Routines provide comfort, structure, and a sense of familiarity that we all benefit from.

Term four is the time of year when end-of-year trips, events, and concerts take place in schools.

All this change can be a bit overwhelming for our students on the Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) in local schools. Many students often find comfort and security in having a structured schedule.

Having a set routine provides a sense of order and helps students understand what is expected of them throughout the day.

Social stories, with photos and captions, are helpful in preparing a student for a change in their daily routine e.g. a beach trip.

A simple calendar can also help students get through the holidays, by crossing off each day, with the support of a daily holiday schedule.

Making adjustments to the routine so that students learn to cope with changes, can support them in managing themselves when events occur.

Change is a part of life, and by having consistent routines in place, we can help students navigate and adapt to those changes.
