We love movement group!
A favourite part of the Pītau Rāki timetable is Thursday's visit to the base school for our movement group.
This weekly session allows small groups of students from our unit a chance to go on an outing to Pītau Allenvale, where they have a very busy, fun filled session in Manawa (the hall). We are very grateful to two of our specialists, Katie and Vanessa, who set up the equipment before we arrive and help us during the session too.
Our students get to use a variety of different equipment to move their bodies in new and challenging ways, and burn off a bit of energy - which has been particularly useful during the cold, wet winter months. Sometimes we run, or climb, or jump, or balance. We use our arms to throw things at targets, to slide on the scooter board, or to move equipment to different places. And at the end of each session we practice relaxing and breathing, while listening to calming music and lying under the parachute. These sessions are a great way to practice our school value of Ora - looking after our bodies and wellbeing.
These sessions are also a great chance to make connections with our base school, and to see familiar faces from previous years.
We are already looking forward to another fun session this coming Thursday.
