The Power of Core Words in AAC
In AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), core words are crucial. These words, unlike specific nouns, are extremely versatile. By focusing learning on core words, AAC users can learn to communicate more effectively and efficiently. Let's explore the significance of core words!
In AAC, focusing on core words is crucial in enhancing communication abilities. While many individuals focus mainly on nouns (fringe words) in systems, core words are absolutely essential in extending communication ability.
What are core words?
Core words are a set of well researched, frequently used words that span across different contexts and can be used to express a wide range of messages. These are words such as "I," "you," "help," "want," and "more." Unlike nouns, which represent specific people, places, objects and things, core words are versatile and can be used in a range of combinations to form original messages; "I want help", "help like that", "you want help?", "I want more help", "I help you more" and so on. Notice there are no nouns in these messages, but the meaning would be very clear and specific in context.
How can I teach core words at home?
Teaching and modeling the use of Core Words is essential for AAC users to develop their language skills. These need to be taught across environments to help with learning them well. Here are some strategies:
- Core Word of the Day: Choose a Core Word and focus on it for the day. Encourage its use in different natural contexts and activities.
- Core Word Songs and Games: Incorporate Core Words into songs and games to make learning fun and enjoyable. This engages users and facilitates repeated exposure to the words.
- Visual Supports: Use visual supports, such as communication boards or electronic devices with Core Words prominently displayed. This helps AAC users locate and use the Core Words more easily.
By emphasising core words, AAC users gain the ability to express themselves more efficiently and effectively. Instead of relying solely on a limited vocabulary of nouns, they have the power to convey complex thoughts and desires across a range of contexts.
Remember, the goal is to promote communication flexibility and expand language abilities. By focusing on core words, AAC users can learn to express themselves in a more flexible and meaningful way. Whether it's expressing desires, sharing information, or participating in conversations, core words open doors to more effective communication.
