New school name

Allenvale School —

As with all new schools built in Christchurch Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga have gifted us a name.

Our gifted school name is Pītau. (pronounced pea-toe) Our new base school will be built in a shared site with West Belfast Senior School. We hope to have an announcement concerning building stage dates prior to Christmas.

Our new satellite to be built on the combined Cobham Intermediate and Burnside Primary site has the gifted name, Pītau Uru (Uru meaning West) and our Ashgrove satellite has the gifted name, Pītau Raki (Raki meaning North). Raki pronounced ra-key.

We will be consulting with you, with the Board, staff and students to see how and when Pītau will be fully introduced. Some schools have chosen to use both their gifted name and their traditional name together while others have fully embraced their newly gifted name.

Pītau is:

the young succulent shoot of a fern, fern frond, fern shoot.
