Fine motor skills involve the coordination of small muscles in our hands and fingers to perform delicate tasks.
Fine motor skills are essential for the students we work with to develop academic, play and self help skills. We use fine motor skills for everyday tasks!
Some examples of developing fine motor include: Cutting, pegboards, playdough, threading, stickers and puzzles.
These activities can be linked to different areas of the curriculum, for example: sorting coloured pom poms and other objects with tongs, or making and continuing patterns by threading coloured beads for maths, making letters and numbers out of playdough or pegboards.
Fine motor skills can help students to write and draw, to engage in play with objects like lego, duplo and trains, and to do everyday tasks like doing up zips, buttons, brushing their teeth and using cutlery.
It is essential our students develop these skills to increase their independence at school and home!
