Shared Reading

Alysia Cotter, Speech Language Therapist —

Shared reading is a simple activity that all our Pītau-Allenvale students can enjoy!

Shared reading can help students learn to engage in books for reading and writing, learn how to use their communication systems (e.g. Proloquo to Go) using Aided Language Modelling but mostly... how to have FUN with stories!

Shared Reading has been introduced to several classrooms over the few last years and we have seen huge success with increased listening and attention - some students have moved from engaging with a story for 2-3 minutes up to 45-50 minutes!

Shared reading as we use it here at Pītau-Allenvale, encourages staff to point to words in the student’s communication system to help tell the story as the book is read. Our students understand the symbols/visual language in their communication systems - often more than hearing the verbal word. So when they ‘see and hear’ the story this way they often understand it so much more.

It's a lovely 1:1 activity or something fun to share with siblings.

Check out the video to see how we do it!  We would love to see some photos of you giving shared reading a go at home over the holidays on Seesaw!
