"Where Words Fail, Music Speaks." (Hans Christian Andersen.)

Mhairi Joll —

Music has long been recognised for the contribution it can make to people's health and wellbeing. It is also an effective tool for developing communication and social skills, interpersonal skills and in building relationships.

Our Takare Senior students have been participating in interactive music-making sessions for the past several months. These fun activities are always person-centred and adapted to the strengths of each student. This non-verbal medium has proven to be a means of communication, of self-expression, social interaction and enjoyment.

Participation in music-making also gives our students opportunities to express their preferences, be as independent as possible, and make choices, increasing their self-confidence, self-esteem, acceptance and success.

Over the last two terms we have focussed on:

  • Turn-taking and sharing attention

  • Listening and waiting

  • Building peer relationships, awareness of others and working as a group

  • Sharing eye contact

  • Self expression and creativity

It has been lovely to see our students thrive, and experience the exceptional power of music. 🎵
