Music Therapy Student Joins the Team

Michelle King —

Music Therapy is a powerful tool that connects with many aspects of our daily lives

Kia ora! My name is Ting Wei, and I am a second-year Master of Music Therapy student at Victoria University of Wellington. This year, I have started my placement in Christchurch with Southern Music Therapy. I am excited to be at Pītau-Allenvale School, supporting our young people every Monday until October 2025.

How can music support well-being?
Music is a powerful tool that connects with many aspects of our daily lives. It can:

  • Support movement and coordination

  • Enhance emotional regulation and self-expression

  • Build confidence and social skills

  • Promote overall well-being and quality of life

What does music therapy look like?
Music therapy sessions involve structured, engaging musical activities designed to support learning, self-expression, and development in a fun and meaningful way.

How does music therapy fit into this space?

Music therapy is flexible and can be delivered in group or one-on-one settings. Sessions are tailored to the needs of each young person, with goals developed in collaboration with whānau, specialists, teachers, and the young person themselves.

I am excited to collaborate with the students, staff, and families at Pītau-Allenvale School and to share the joy and benefits of music therapy together!
