Hoiho Term 2

Sue McGovern —

What a busy start to the term we have had!

Kia ora whanau,

What a busy start to the term we have had. These winter months certainly lend themselves to ‘moving it’,...even if just to stay warm.

Hoiho students are embracing the concept of Ora - the need to work hard and to push ourselves when we exercise and play sport.

Healthy eating has also been a consideration for some of us. Some of us are currently enjoying bowls of pumpkin soup that have been made by students, while others are preparing their own breakfast, making healthy sandwiches for lunch and taking responsibility for preparing their own food.

Cold outing days have seen us visit Turunga Library in town and the Warehouse at Eastgate to complete a shopping quest which required us to locate and price some common items.

Sunnier days meant we could enjoy a trek around Victoria Park and Sumner.

We have also had a focus on NZ books this term. To date we have enjoyed Joy Cowley’s ‘Day of the Rain’ and a story about pet rescue during Cyclone Gabrielle called “Pearl in a Whirl.” Our latest is “Swoop the Magpie”, a true story about a fireman who raises a young magpie chick alongside his cat and dog in his beachside home.

The student’s use of language via their devices to support these stories has been really heart warming and once again, I have had a reminder to never underestimate what we can achieve!
