PB4L - Painting it Green!

Creating shared language and culture is part of the foundation of being a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school so we literally painted it on our walls!

What is PB4L?

"PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence.

The Positive Behaviour for Learning School-Wide framework, otherwise known as PB4L School-Wide, is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. The framework can be tailored to your school’s own environment and cultural needs.

It’s not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems and practices you have in place to support them to make positive behaviour choices."

Why Green?

PB4L is made up of three tiers. The first tier is all the supportive and encouraging ways in which we set our kura up to help all of our students to learn, show and celebrate positive behaviour everyday.

Green is the colour of this first tier and the way in which it is rolled out school wide is often described as 'painting it green'. Seeing as our base school is only going to be our learning home until our new school build is finished, we decided to take the opportunity for a bit of redecoration and take this one step further!

Our school community first noticed green patches of paint appear around the school. This created a bit of wondering about what it was all about. There were even rumours of a "Green Paint Bandit".  Next, whakatauki and quotes that resonate with our school values and the respectful, affirming ways in which we value our teaching and learning relationships started appearing.

Themes such as "connection before correction", "what we focus on flourishes" and quotes such as "Small moments matter. Every time we talk to a student we have the chance to build positive culture" by Kathryn Fishman Weaver are visual reminders of what we do here at Pītau-Allenvale every day.

Our PB4L team has created posters based on these so that these messages can be seen at our satellites, off site classrooms and taken with us to our new school. We might not get away with painting on the brand new walls but our messages of positive culture will be carried with us.

Some of our green patches are still empty waiting for words of inspiration. If you have noticed any, watch this space!
