Learning through play is the way to go
The Te Tauihu Team and students intend to explore this statement to its maximum this term! We could not have wished for a more fitting theme to achieve this goal.
Our students have had lots of fun learning about the different ways people all over the world might celebrate occasions such as; birthdays, weddings, cultural days, feast days, religious days, holidays, goals, milestones etc. During our exploration of these different celebrations, we discovered a central thread throughout ALL cultures. No celebration is a success without kai!! Our growing teenage boys absolutely love this part of their learning and have great fun in preparing foods and even more fun eating it!!
Many of our school values are practiced during these "fun" cooking and art sessions. Fine motor skills are practiced and life skills such as cleaning up after ourselves and completing chores, are encouraged.
Our chances to create more opportunities for our students to "learn through play" are only going to increase, as we start to get into warmer weather. Lots of water-play activities and other outdoor activities will become available. It was heartwarming to see most of Kekeno and Tuna students having fun together and being able to share the same space with each other on our Water Slide and Bouncy Castle. This was having fun and inadvertently learning to respect and tolerate each other.
The experience, knowledge of our students, and creativeness of Team Te Tauihu will see us reaching our goal of involving all of our students, in "learning through play" scenarios, which will be custom designed for them.
