About Pitt Island School
Welcome to Pitt Island School. Pitt Island School is the only school located on the second largest Island in the Chatham Islands group.
Pitt Island School is a decile 9 school situated 878km from Christchurch and approximately 23km south of the Chatham Islands.
The school roll currently stands at 8, comprising 3 girls and 5 boys. We have a teaching principal, 0.2 release teacher, a part time grounds person, cleaner and secretary.
There are 21 homes on the island with 6 of them having children who attend the school. The island community is very proud and proactive in their support of the school and the school is the hub of the community. Social functions are always well attended.
The school has one classroom linked to a library/resource/staffroom. We are well equipped with digital devices and internet access. There is a heated swimming pool and a large concrete court area.
Socially the students have very little contact with New Zealand, apart from the occasional visit. We do get to travel to the Chatham Islands (weather permitting) to take part in the sporting and cultural events with the two schools there. Access to, and on, the island is difficult especially during the winter months.
Pitt Island is one of New Zealand’s unique islands and is an important link in the conservation of endangered flora and fauna. The uniqueness of the island and its ecological position in New Zealand’s plan to save and increase its number of endangered species is a constant source of pride to us all. We have established a partnership with DOC, making a native planting nursery on the school grounds.
Pitt Island School is a remarkable little school with a strong emphasis on family, community, the environment and academic achievement.
