Your frequently asked questions
Take a look at some of the common questions we get.
Every week we take hundreds of phone calls. These are some of our more common questions:
Who has to do CPD?
Anyone registered as a Journeyman, Tradesman or a Certifier.
When will the online version of the 2022 CPD course be available?
Early October.
Can I apply for registration online?
Sadly, not at the moment. You will need to complete the paper application forms which can be found here. Watch this space though, we are currently working to move registration online through your Trade Login.
What do I need to submit when applying for Journeyman or Tradesman registration?
The completed application (visit here), a current Ministry of Justice Criminal Record check (apply online here) and a certified copy of your NZQA issued National/New Zealand Certificate.
Can you accept a copy of my NZQA Record of Achievement for registration?
No, we cannot. We can only accept the NZQA issued National/New Zealand Certificate.
I currently hold an active Tradesman licence and want to apply for Certifying registration. Can I apply for registration only and continue working in the trade?
To be able to carry out restricted work, you need to hold an active practising licence. If you apply for Certifying registration, your Tradesman licence will be cancelled as you cannot hold a licence lower than your registration class. You will need to apply for registration and a practising licence.
I’m applying for registration and/or a practicing licence, do I need to pay the disciplinary and prosecution levy? My employer says that I do not need to as he has already paid his.
Each registered person (Journeyman, Tradesman, Certifying) is required to pay the annual disciplinary and prosecution levy. You only need to pay it once per year and it is not charged per licence. You must hold a practising licence issued in your name. You cannot work under your supervisor’s licence.
I sat the June Certifying exam, when do I get the results?
Results will be issued by Wednesday 10 August 2022. If you are planning on applying for Certifying registration, please contact the Registration team on 0800 743 262 option 2 to confirm you have also held an active Tradesman practising licence for 24 months before you apply.
When does registration for the November certifying exams open?
1 August 2022 and closes on 10 October 2022.
I’m applying for registration, why do I need to supply a new Ministry of Justice Criminal record check when I supplied one with a previous registration application?
The Board is
responsible for public safety and one of the ways ensuring that is that people
carrying out restricted work are fit and proper. Things may have changed and we need to be assured about your fitness to practice. Criminal record checks is one way we do this.
