Marking requirements of gas appliances
Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010
Energy Safety, part of WorkSafe New Zealand, has recently received questions from gasfitters relating to the marking requirements of gas appliances. Specifically, what does the Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010 (GSMR) require installers to check when installing a gas appliance.
Regulation 72 of the GSMR requires that an installer of an appliance checks that the appliance is labelled with the gas safety compliance label or that the appliance has a supplier declaration.
Energy Safety recommends that you check that the appliance has a gas safety compliance label and that you take a photo for your records. You can also attach this photo to your certification. If the appliance is labelled with the gas safety compliance label, there is no need for you to look for a supplier declaration.
Example labels are available in the GSMR at Gas Safety Compliance Labels.
Supplier declarations on the WorkSafe Gas Appliance Supplier Declaration (GASD) database
The certification document and supplier declaration for the appliance must be current on the date that the appliance was imported into the country. Both documents can expire after importation and still be considered current for the purposes of installation, if the physical appliance that is to be installed was imported when the certification and declaration was current. Gasfitters will be unable to prove this point true or false, hence the allowance in the GSMR for the installer to rely on the gas safety compliance label.
The WorkSafe GASD portal is located here.
If you have specific concerns about a product, then please notify WorkSafe - Energy Safety detailing the model number and serial number of the product with a photo of the appliance markings and the appliance itself. Please include details surrounding the place of purchase and a copy of the invoice if available.
