Eli Hancock - BOT Student Representative 2022 Candidate

PNBHS —

It may seem tempting to consider this student rep election as a joke; as something to make fun of and ridicule - Naturally two bona fide rangas running for student rep attract that kind of attention. In past years student representatives have been overwhelmed with work and struggled to come through with any major progress, through no fault of their own, to the point where they have struggled to commit to student forum meetings throughout the year, and the rest of the wider student body is given absolutely no knowledge of their progress (if there was any). The few things that I can promise going forward, because frankly I’m in no mood for empty promises and claims, are that I will do my absolute best to create a student forum that will meet frequently. With one meeting every 2 weeks, on consistent days of the week, I intend to build a forum that is capable of functioning cohesively even if a number of students, or myself, cannot be there for a particular meeting, though the forum will be my top priority Alongside these consistent meetings, a bimonthly (once every two months) update on the forum’s progress will be made available on Stratus, which will allow those of you who care to see any further developments within the school, and those of you who don’t care to gloss over it instead - I’d rather that than boring you in assembly (I wouldn’t want to take time away from Mr Bovey’s history lessons). I promise to open the accessibility of the student forum and the student rep to the masses - the 1800 strong bunch of ‘educated young men of outstanding character’ that you lot supposedly are; by making our student forum more consistent and focused, considering the different ideas and thoughts that you have - I’ve heard a variety of different ideas so far, but I doubt that after the 17th time the board of trustees have heard complaints about haircuts and no long pants for juniors that they’re suddenly going to change their mind. At this stage, all I can propose is a system of student representation that will be more effective and open to different ideas - I won’t pretend to champion a revolution of hair dye or moustaches at school that will never happen, I only promise to be committed and effective in the role. At Boys High, we are often fed many lies and hollow promises in the name of preserving the structure and effectiveness of the school - I intend to use a position as student representative to allow open and honest conversations that are not inhibited by lies, allowing us to have realistic and achievable goals.
