Ngā Manu Kōrero 2025 – A Voice for the Future
On Friday, 14 June, the Regent Theatre in Palmerston North came alive with passion, purpose, and powerful kōrero as part of the Manawatū-Horowhenua Secondary Schools’ Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competition. Our school was proudly represented by Jaden Durston, a talented Year 11 student who stepped onto the senior English stage for the very first time.
Although he did not place this year, his performance was nothing short of inspiring. Speaking to the theme “The Beacon of a Light that will never fade,” Jaden challenged his audience to reflect deeply on the role they play in ensuring the survival and strength of Te Reo Māori. With poise and presence, he delivered a thoughtful and provocative prepared speech, followed by an impromptu speech—each showcasing his sincerity and maturity.
Competing in this prestigious event, which has celebrated the power of youth voice for over sixty years, demanded courage, dedication, and a great deal of preparation. Jaden shared that his motivation for entering the competition was to raise awareness of Aotearoa New Zealand’s indigenous language, a cause close to his heart. He also expressed his excitement for next year’s event, eager to build on all he has learned.
Jaden’s voice carried not only a message of cultural significance, but also the values of our school—Nihil Boni Sine Labore, Nothing Achieved Without Hard Work.
Congratulations, Jaden, on your outstanding efforts and for representing our school with integrity, passion, and pride.
