Year 10 Digital Art – 10VAD

Course Content: This is a HALF YEAR option subject that offers students an introduction to Digital Art. Students will be exposed to a variety of design projects from photography, animation, typography, design professions and career paths. In this digital world if you are looking for a profession where you can apply your talents, then look no further than a career in digital media. From logos, commercial design, website design and advertisements, to animation, gaming design and illustration, design appears in many forms. This course will open your eyes and start you on a digital path of learning. Year 10 Digital Art prepares students wishing to take Design and Photography in the senior school.

Course requirements: It is recommended that students have access to their own laptop, however there are departmental computers available to use. Adobe Creative Suite software will be included as part of the course costs take-home component for the year.

Year 10 Visual Art – 10VAV

Course Content: This is a HALF YEAR option subject that offers students an introduction to Visual Art. Students will be challenged to think visually as they build on a variety of skills associated with drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Students will be given the opportunity to explore their own personal, socio-cultural and aesthetic experiences through the production and understanding of art. Students will learn about themselves and others through individual and collaborative tasks while making artwork. Year 10 Visual Art prepares students wishing to take Visual Art and Painting in the senior school. Note that some Architecture courses require students to have studied Visual Arts at a senior level.

Level One Digital Art – 11VAD

Course Content: Digital Art at Level 1 encourages students to generate and extend their design ideas through photography, and design processes. Students will produce work related to their connection to a localised place. They will explore their personal interests and enable their own creativity to develop. Throughout the year, students will be introduced to a variety of contemporary and historical design models and will be pushed to extend their own ideas in a direction that is new and exciting. In completing this course, students will be more informed about the specific direction they wish their photography and design work to take at NCEA Level 2.

AssessmentAssessment: Level 1 Digital Art is a 10 credit course, offering two external Achievement Standards.

· Explore Visual Arts processes and conventions to inform own art making (externally assessed - 5 credits)

· Create a sustained body of related artworks in response to an art making proposition (externally assessed - 5 credits)

Level One Visual Art – 11VAV

Course Content: Visual Art at Level 1 encourages students to actively generate and develop their ideas through hands-on drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media processes. Students will produce work that visually explores their cultural background and connection to a localised place. Throughout the year, students will be introduced to a variety of contemporary and historical artist models and will be encouraged to extend their own ideas in a direction that is new and innovative. In completing this course students will be more informed about the specific direction they wish their artwork to take at NCEA Level 2.

Assessment:
 Level 1 Visual Art is a 10 credit course, offering two external Achievement Standards.

· Explore Visual Arts processes and conventions to inform own art making (externally assessed - 5 credits)

· Create a sustained body of related artworks in response to an art-making proposition (externally assessed - 5 credits)

Entry Requirements: Entry into Level 1 Visual Art will be aided by the completion of Year 10 Visual Art.

Level Two Painting – 12VPT

Course Content: The aim of the Level 2 Painting course is to provide students with a thorough grounding in painting practices. Students are taught to understand the ways paintings are made and to develop knowledge of the current processes, procedures, materials and techniques. This involves how to carry out research, generate ideas and develop these ideas in a systematic way through to the finished painting. A workbook is kept throughout the year to record this process of development. At the beginning of the year students are guided as to their approaches in painting, both in subject matter and media. For the remainder of the year, students choose their own theme to develop their ideas for their folio, looking at a range of appropriate artist models in both traditional and contemporary practice. This course offers students a more personal and in-depth study in their exploration of subject matter and media.

Assessment: Level 2 Painting is a 16 credit course offering two Achievement Standards.

  • Develop ideas in a related series of drawings appropriate to established painting practice (internally assessed - 4 credits)
  • Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within painting (externally assessed - 12 credits)

Entry Requirements: Entry into Level 2 Painting will be aided by the completion of Level 1 Visual Art. Where places are limited, preference will be given to students who have taken Level 1 Visual Art and gained all their internal credits at an Achieved level or higher.

Level Two Photography – 12VPH

Course Content: The Level 2 Photography course provides students with a foundation of both digital camera and Photoshop skills, for creating effective photographic work. They engage in an ongoing decision-making process to generate, develop, and extend ideas related to their chosen theme. A student's work may move into one of the main genres of portraiture, still-life, sport documentary, or landscapes (rural and/or urban); there are many theme possibilities that they may choose from for their work, relevant to their own interests. The course is grounded in building understanding of established practice, which involves visual literacy, awareness of cultural contexts, and broad opportunities to push their creativity.

Assessment: Level 2 Photography is a 16 credit course offering two Achievement Standards.

  • Use drawing methods to apply knowledge of conventions appropriate to photography (internally assessed - 4 credits)
  • Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within photography (externally assessed 12 credits)

Course Requirements: Students will require access to their own DSLR or a high-quality point-and-shoot camera and a laptop. Adobe Creative Suite software will be included as part of the course costs take home component for the year.

Entry Requirements: Nil. However, entry into Level 2 Photography will be aided by the completion of Level 1 Digital Art. Where places are limited, preference will be given to students who have taken Level 1 Digital Art and gained all their internal credits at an Achieved level or higher.

Level Two Design – 12VDS

Course Content: This course prepares students for the first stages of a career in Graphic Design or many related design or architectural careers. Students are taught the basic principles of design and the ways that designers work. They will learn about the design process and how to apply this process to a range of design tasks, including graphic design, package design, typographic layout and the use of Photoshop and InDesign. The aim of this course is to provide students with a thorough grounding in Design, which involves understanding a design brief, how to carry out research, generating ideas and developing these ideas in a systematic way through to finished artwork.

Assessment: Level 2 Design is a 20 credit course offering three Achievement Standards.

  • Produce a resolved work that demonstrates purposeful control of skills appropriate to visual arts cultural context (internally assessed 5 credits)
  • Develop ideas in a related series of drawings appropriate to established design practice (internally assessed 4 credits)
  • Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within design (externally assessed 12 credits)

Level Three Painting – 13VPT

Course Content: This course offers students the opportunity to follow their own personal interests in greater depth as a result of having successfully completed Level 2 Painting. They are required to explore global issues that relate to a chosen area of interest and as a result, formulate their own themed study for the duration of the year. Students will use both traditional and contemporary artists as models for their own work to develop their individual proposals. Most of the year is spent generating, analysing, clarifying and extending drawings and paintings that explore their theme, using a variety of techniques, processes and methods.

Scholarship: Students are given the opportunity to enter the scholarship examination in this subject. Conceptual thinking, practical communication and analytical skills are required to submit for this portfolio of work. A thorough workbook containing research, written notes, critique reflections, visual notes are to be maintained throughout the year. Should students wish to enter scholarship for this course, they must discuss this with their teacher.

Level 3 Painting is an 18 credit course offering two Achievement Standards.

  • Systematically clarify ideas using drawing informed by established painting practice (internally assessed - 4 credits)
  • Produce a systematic body of work that integrates conventions and regenerates ideas within painting practice (externally assessed - 14 credits)

Entry Requirements: Entry into Level 3 Painting will be aided by the completion of Level 2 Painting. Where places are limited preference will be given to students who have taken Level 2 Painting and gained 12 external credits.

Level Three Photography – 13VPH

Course Content: The Level 3 Photography course builds on the skills that have been learned in the Level 2 course. Students will continue to develop camera skills using a digital camera to visually explore the world. Students will research a variety of artists by investigating their methods and ideas related to photography and apply these to their own work. Although the emphasis is on photography, student work can demonstrate influences from other art disciplines such as painting, design, printmaking, and installation art. Students then continue to produce a folio showing a development of photography sequences, procedures, and processes.

Scholarship: Students are given the opportunity to enter the scholarship examination in this subject. Conceptual thinking, practical communication and analytical skills are required to submit for this portfolio of work. A thorough workbook or e-portfolio (ie. Adobe Spark) containing research, written notes, critique reflections, visual notes are to be maintained throughout the year. Should students wish to enter scholarship for this course, they must discuss this with their teacher.

Level Three Design – 13VDS

Course Content: Students work throughout the year to complete an external folio of work and two internals, which requires them to demonstrate their ability to successfully solve design problems.

Students new to the subject in Year 13 will be taught the principles of design and how to apply these to graphic design problems. They will also be instructed in the use of computer programmes to enable them to produce work that reflects contemporary design practice. In preparing work for their folio submission, students select a topic and carry out a design brief: that enables them to research information, generate, develop and refine ideas and resolve the solution in finished design outcomes. Students will typically attempt design problems that involve corporate identity, typographic layout and graphic design. Students wishing to pursue a career in any of the fields of design, (graphic, industrial, fashion, typographic, illustration, architecture and interior design), are prepared for tertiary study and given guidance and advice to enable them to have the best chance of achieving a place in these limited entry courses.

Level Three History of Art – 13VAH

Course Content: The History of Art is the ultimate Humanities subject. We live in a world of images and The History of Art offers a way of engaging with that world.

Students will learn how to: interpret what they see, how to write a logical and convincing argument, how to conduct purposeful research and how to think on their feet.

By studying Level 3 History of Art students will gain valuable insight into Early Modernism. Understanding of culture, art, responses to war, the unconscious, politics, philosophy, spirituality, the increase of modernity and technology of 20th century Europe.

Students will explore the following art styles: Cubism, Der Blaue Reiter, Die Bruke, Fauvism, Futurism, De Stjil, Surrealism, Dada.

Prerequisites
: Ability in English is necessary, as all internal and external Achievement Standards are essay based. You will need to have 15 credits or more in NCEA Level 1 English, History or Classical Studies or in consultation with the Teacher in Charge. Ability in Art is NOT necessary.

Assessment: Level 3 Art History is a 16 credit course offering four Achievement Standards.

  • Examine the impact of media and processes on artworks (internally assessed - 4 credits)
  • Construct an argument based on interpretation of research in art history (internally assessed - 4 credits)
  • Examine the relationship(s) between a theory and art works (internally assessed - 4 credits)
  • Demonstrate understanding of style in art works (externally assessed - 4 credits)
