Ohakune Outdoors Camp
By Calvin Young and Declan McCormack
On the Ohakune Outdoors camp we experienced great challenges while maintaining teamwork and fun. On the camp we did many things like white water rafting in the Tongariro River and also hiking the Old Coach Road.
Old Coach Road
On Day two we set out on a 15 kilometre hike on the Old Coach Road. Overall it was a calming hike and most of the boys liked it. Along the way we saw many viaducts which were built around 1908, many being constructed with dangerous ladders instead of scaffolding.
White Water Rafting
It was a bright and early Wednesday morning when we set off on an hour drive from Ohakune Station Lodge to Tūrangi, arriving at Tongariro White Water Rafting. Once we arrived at the Tongariro River Rafting base, we buckled up with all the essentials needed to keep safe during our duration in the river. After everyone had suited up, we hopped on the buses and drove down to the Tongariro River. We grouped up with our peers and our tour guides and strode our way down to the river carrying our rafts. Our tour guides taught us the basics, and then we set off down the river. Teamwork was a high necessity on the raft because each person needed to stay in sync with each other in order to keep moving.
The rafting adventure showed us boys how beautiful New Zealand was, with all the trees, the forest, the rocks, the glistening water and the sun being out all making it a memorable time at camp.
