Year 10 Digital Technologies - 10DGT

This is a Half Year Option. The course will lead into Computer Science at Level 1 and Electronics at Level 1. The course places emphasis on the following areas: Programming, Digital Jobs evaluation, Electronics and Robotics. Students will need to have their own laptop available for every lesson. Tablets, Notebooks, Chromebooks, and MacBook are not suitable for this course. Prerequisites: Open to all students. In order to complete all course work a laptop is needed. Course Fee $ 25.


Year 10 Design and Visual Communication (DVC) - 10TDV

DVC focuses on two main areas: Spatial Design (architecture, landscape, and interior) and Product Design (furniture and devices). 3D CAD modelling and 2D digital media presentation skills are fully integrated into the course, as well as freehand sketching, mock-up/models, and instrumental drawings.

The subject focuses on developing transferable design skills (problem-solving, collaboration, creative thinking) and communication skills (verbal and digital presentation techniques). It leads students to a variety of design-orientated career pathways.

For the half-year rotation, students will learn 2D instrumental drawing techniques and advance into the digital world to design, development and modelling an adventure park using SketchUp. This is a foundational course for the senior levels.

Course Requirement: A small specialist drawing equipment pack and the subject donation.

Year 10 Metalwork - 10TMC
This course will include theory, reinforced by homework, and practical units of work in basic metal working skills and safety. The course is designed to prepare students with the skills and knowledge required to commence the Level 1 Mechanical Engineering course.


Year 10 Woodwork - 10TWD

The course focuses on basic practical woodworking skills through individual student projects in a well-equipped practical workshop. Students gain exposure to a range of key skills working with hand tools, portable power tools and basic fixed workshop machines. Students complete a range of theory units focused on project planning and basic health and safety requirements in a workshop environment.

Course Requirements

All students must wear school shoes and socks while in workshop and must supply their own safety glasses. Students will not be permitted in the workshop without these safety items.

Level One Digital Technology - 11DGT
This is a Level 1 Computer Science course. The course will lead on to Digital Technology at Levels 2 and 3. The course places an emphasis on the full process of planning, researching, producing and reporting on various digital outcomes. The content for each achievement standard is project-based. Students will need access to a laptop as this class is a BYOD subject. Students are expected to have their laptop available for every lesson. Tablets or Netbooks are not suitable for this course. Software used at Level 1 includes: Python (IDLE), Notepad++, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Photoshop. Prerequisites: Open to all students. 

Level One Design and Visual Communication - 11TDV

Students will use SketchUp to develop a sleepout which includes spatial, landscape and product designs; produce instrumental drawing and a presentation board. One internal and one external Achievement Standards will be used for assessments. Students who achieve both standards will have the opportunity to advance to Level 2.

Level One Joinery - 11TJN

The course builds upon skills gained in Year 9 and 10 workshop courses. Students complete practical and theory ITO Unit Standards (BCATS) that contribute to NCEA Level One. Students complete practical projects that are assessed throughout the year alongside theory work that will collectively contribute to the final grade. Students gain experience in the use of a wide variety of machines and hand tools. Satisfactory completion of this course is compulsory for students wishing to be accepted into Year 12 construction and joinery courses.

Prerequisites
It is recommended that students have previously taken a Year 9/10 technology-based course however, this is not compulsory. Any student wishing to be selected for the course must have displayed an appropriate work ethic and attitude in Year 10.

All students must wear school shoes and socks while in workshop and must supply their own safety glasses. Students will not be permitted in the workshop without these safety items.

Level One Mechanical Engineering - 11TMC

Students considering the Mechanical Engineering option will ideally have completed the Year 10 Workshop Metal Technology.

Students will need to have a good understanding of mathematics, and be studying General Science and/or Physics. A good standard of hand-writing is required.

Students study a programme of industry Unit Standards that are practically biased (students will complete several practical projects), and supported by underpinning theory components. Successful students, who achieve the prerequisite number of credits, will have the opportunity to advance to the Year 12/13 Level 2 course.

Level One Technology Innovation - 11TIV

This course combines design elements and practical skills as students develop solutions to given needs or opportunities. The subject has an academic focus that incorporates aspects of research, design, analysis and practical outcome. Based in a Technology classroom students can access a wide range of specialist facilities depending on the requirements of each student’s individual project. The course is assessed using Technology Achievement Standards that contribute toward NCEA Level One. Satisfactory completion of this course is compulsory for students wishing to be accepted into Year 12 construction and joinery courses.

Prerequisites
It is recommended that students have previously taken a Year 9/10 technology-based course however, this is not compulsory. Any student wishing to be selected for the course must have displayed an appropriate work ethic and attitude in Year 10.

Level Two Automotive - 12TAU

The Year 12 Automotive course introduces students to the automotive industry through a combination of practical and theory-based Unit Standard assessments delivered by specialist trade-qualified teachers. Practical work is completed at our purpose-built school automotive workshop. Students take part in the restoration and modification of vehicles and will be exposed to a range of aspects of the automotive industry. In addition to vehicle restoration students will gain experience in relevant vehicle servicing and general mechanical repairs. The course is offered as a single option. Students may also select Mechanics in addition to Automotive.

Prerequisites

Students considering the Year 12 automotive course should have successfully passed the relevant Level One Mechanics course. In addition to this, students must display an appropriate work ethic and attitude. Any student that does not meet the prerequisites may be accepted after consultation with the Head of Department.

All students must supply their own steel-capped work boots and safety glasses. Students will not be permitted into the automotive workshop without these safety items.

Level Two Construction - 12TCN

The Year 12 Construction course introduces students to the construction industry through a combination of practical and theory based BCATS assessments. Practical work is completed at our purpose-built school construction site. Students take part in the construction of full-size residential houses and will be exposed to all aspects of the building process from foundation to finished product. Students gain experience in the use of a wide variety of industry power tools and machines. The course is offered as a single and double-line option. Students may also select joinery in addition to construction. The Year 12 Joinery or Construction course is compulsory for students wishing to be accepted in a Year 13 Construction or Joinery course.

Prerequisites

Students considering the Year 12 construction course should have successfully passed Unit Standards 24352, 24355 and 24356. In addition to this, students must have displayed an appropriate work ethic and attitude throughout the Year 11 Joinery Course. Any student that does not meet the pre requisites may be accepted after consultation with the Head of Department.

Course Requirements

All students must supply their own steel capped work boot and safety glasses. Students will not be permitted onto the site without these safety items.

Level Two Design and Visual Communication (DVC) - 12TDV

DVC focuses on two main areas: Spatial Design (architecture, landscape, and interior) and Product Design (furniture and devices). 3D CAD modelling and 2D digital media presentation skills are fully integrated into the course as well as freehand sketching, mock-up/models, and instrumental drawings.

The subject focuses on developing transferable design skills (problem-solving, collaboration, creative thinking) and communication skills (verbal and digital presentation techniques). It leads students to a variety of design-orientated career pathways.

At the full-year option course, students will use SketchUp to develop a cafe and furniture and produce a presentation album. There is a greater emphasis on the exploration and refinement of design ideas through more complex CAD modelling techniques.

Prerequisite: Achievement in all NCEA Level 1 standards at Year 11. Direct entry is possible at this level but only after consultation with the HOD.

Level Two Digital Technology - 12DGT

This is a Level 2 Computer Science course. The course will lead on to Digital Technology at Level 3. The course places an emphasis on the full process of researching, planning, producing and reporting on various digital outcomes. The content for each achievement standard is project based. Students will need access to a laptop as this class is a BYOD subject. Students are expected to have their laptops available for every lesson. Tablets or Netbooks are not suitable for this course. Software used at Level 2 includes: Python (IDLE), Notepad++, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Word. Prerequisites: Open to all students, however, Level 1, or previous programming experience is beneficial. 

Level Two Electronics - 12ELC

This is an introductory course for students interested in electronics and who may wish to pursue further training and employment in this field and focuses on:

· Direct current electrical theory and the identification of electronic componentry.

· Advanced knowledge of circuit concepts and component function.

· Investigating the functions of semiconductor devices and the operation of electronic systems.

· The basic principles and operation of micro-controllers and their role in control systems by learning to program embedded microcontrollers (using the PicAxe microcontrollers to create a self-contained solution)

By the end of the course the students should be able to develop a brief, prototype and construct a simple circuit on a printed circuit board. They should also be able to use a microcontroller as part of a control system (eg: monitor environmental conditions and effect a change).

Project Work:

Students will produce a simple electronic product that will showcase the knowledge and skills they have acquired during the course. The students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts used in the design and construction of electronic environments.

The main project will involve the development of an electronic outcome using advanced techniques and more complex interfacing with a programmable microcontroller.

Level Two Joinery - 12TJN

The Year 12 Joinery course continues to develop practical and theory-based skills utilising ITO Unit Standards (BCATS) that contribute to NCEA Level Two. Students complete practical projects that are assessed throughout the year alongside theory work that will collectively contribute to the final grade. Students gain experience in the use of a wide variety of machines and hand tools. Students complete a combination of individual and group tasks that focus on traditional wood skills and industry joinery skills. Students may also select construction in addition to joinery. The Year 12 Joinery or Construction course is compulsory for students wishing to be accepted in a Year 13 Construction or Joinery course.


Prerequisites

Students considering the Year 12 Joinery course should have successfully passed Unit Standards 24352, 24355 and 24356. In addition to this, students must have displayed an appropriate work ethic and attitude throughout the Year 11 Joinery Course. Any student that does not meet the prerequisites may be accepted after consultation with the Head of Department.

Course Requirements

All students must wear school shoes and socks while in the workshop and must supply their own safety glasses. Students will not be permitted in the workshop without these safety items.

Level Two Mechanical Engineering - 12TMC

Students considering the Year 12 Mechanical Engineering Technology option will have successfully achieved all of the Year 11 Mechanical Engineering Technology Unit Standards.

Students will need to have a good understanding of Mathematics, and be studying General Science and/or Physics. A good standard of hand-writing is required.

All of the Level 2 credits achieved in this subject are assessed from the substantial theory component this course delivers. Students must be prepared to demonstrate their understanding of mechanical processes, and applied mathematics, at an elevated level.
The practical element of the Year 12 programme focuses on consolidating the knowledge and skills gained during previous years. The projects become more demanding in complexity, with a higher expectation for accuracy throughout all of the work completed. Failure to complete the practical elements of this programme, to the quality expected, will result in the student being unable to fully complete the theory components.


Level Two Technical Drawing - 12TTD
Students opting for this programme will be assessed against Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards. No previous experience is necessary however, students must be attending a Technology Workshop course.

The programme includes units on sketching, geometry, engineering drawing and computer-aided design. Students will be expected to supply their own drawing instruments and folders, all of which are listed in the subject stationery pack.

Level Three Automotive - 13TAU

The Year 13 Automotive course builds upon knowledge and skills gained in the Year 12 course. Work is completed through a combination of practical and theory-based Unit Standard assessments delivered by specialist trade-qualified teachers. Practical work is completed at our purpose-built school automotive workshop. Level Three Construction - 13TCN

The Year 13 Construction course builds on the knowledge and skills gained in Year 12 Construction and is assessed through a combination of practical and theory-based BCATS assessments. Practical work is completed at our purpose-built school construction site. Students take part in the construction of full-size residential houses and will be exposed to all aspects of the building process from foundation to finished product. Students gain experience in the use of a wide variety of industry power tools and machines. This course is offered as a single-line or a full-time (construction school) option. This course is the perfect platform for any student looking for a career in the construction sector.

Prerequisites

Students considering the Year 13 construction course should have successfully passed all assessment standards in either Year 12 joinery or Year 12 construction. In addition to this, students must have displayed an appropriate work ethic and attitude throughout the year 12 course. Any student that does not meet the prerequisites may be accepted after consultation with the Head of Department.

Course requirements

All students must supply their own steel-capped work boots and safety glasses. Students will not be permitted onto the site without these safety items. As the theory work is completed online students need to have regular access to a laptop. 

Level Three Construction (full time) – 13TFT

The Year 13 full-time Construction course in collaboration with BCITO is a very unique course designed for students that are committed to a career in the construction sector. Students undertake a full-time construction timetable incorporating subject-specific carpentry units in addition to significant time at our purpose-built school construction site. Students work full-time constructing full-size residential houses and will be exposed to all aspects of the building process from foundation to finished product. Students are guided through all aspects of the construction sector as they work alongside trade-qualified staff to complete private and social relocatable housing. This nationally recognised course is a must for any student committed to the construction sector. The course has a very high success rate with the large majority of students taking up construction based employment.

Assessment

Students complete a micro-credential course in construction that will contribute toward an apprenticeship in carpentry (building) as well as an NCEA level 3 qualification. Students involved in the full-time course will also be part of the school gateway programme working for an employer within the construction sector.

Prerequisites

Students considering the Year 13 full-time construction course should have successfully passed all assessment standards in either Year 12 joinery or Year 12 construction. In addition to this, students must have displayed an appropriate work ethic and attitude throughout the year 12 course. Any student that does not meet the prerequisites may be accepted after consultation with the Head of Department. All students wishing to be considered for this course must speak with the Dead of Department or careers advisor.

Level Three Design and Visual Communication (DVC) - 13TDV

DVC focuses on two main areas: Spatial Design (architecture, landscape, and interior) and Product Design (furniture and devices). 3D CAD modelling and 2D digital media presentation skills are fully integrated into the course as well as freehand sketching, mock-up/models, and instrumental drawings.

The subject focuses on developing transferable design skills (problem-solving, collaboration, creative thinking) and communication skills (verbal and digital presentation techniques). It leads students to a variety of design-orientated career pathways.

At the full-year option course, students will elect their own design spatial project and prepare a final exhibition. This course requires proficiency in a range of computer programmes, especially SketchUp, the integration of specialist spatial and product design knowledge, and visual presentation techniques. Students will exhibit their design work at the end of the year, accompanied by a small banner label designed with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Level Three Electronics - 13ELC
This course focuses on skills and knowledge in the construction, operation, and performance of:

  • learning to program embedded microcontrollers (using the PicAxe microcontrollers to create a self-contained solution)
  • semiconductor devices
  • electronic prototypes.
  • electronic product development
  • logic circuits.
  • ADC and DAC digital electronic interface devices

Project Work
Students will develop and produce a programmable electronic product that will showcase the knowledge and skills they have acquired during the course. The students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts used in the design and use complex techniques in the construction of electronic environments.

Prerequisites: Level 2 Electronics or by negotiation with the Head of Subject.
Good passes in Physics and Mathematics at Level 2 would be an advantage.

Level Three Joinery - 13TJN

The Year 13 Joinery course continues to develop practical and theory-based skills utilising ITO Unit Standards (BCATS) that contribute to NCEA Level Three. Students complete practical projects that are assessed throughout the year alongside theory work that will collectively contribute to the final grade. Students gain experience in the use of a wide variety of machines and hand tools. Students complete a combination of individual and group tasks that focus on traditional wood skills and industry joinery skills. This course is the perfect platform for any student looking for a career in the construction sector.

Students considering the Year 13 Joinery course should have successfully passed all assessment standards in either Year 12 joinery or Year 12 construction. In addition to this, students must have displayed an appropriate work ethic and attitude throughout the year 12 course. Any student that does not meet the prerequisites may be accepted after consultation with the Head of Department.

Level Three Mechanical Engineering - 13TMC

Students considering the Year 13 Mechanical Engineering Technology option will have successfully achieved all of the Year 12 Mechanical Engineering Technology Unit Standards.

Students must have a good understanding of Mathematics and have previously studied General Science and/or Physics. A good standard of handwriting is required.
The Year 13 programme consists of three Level 3 Unit Standards, consisting of Technical Drawing, Machining and Fabrication.


All work is internally assessed and moderated by the Industry Training Organisation (COMPETENZ).

The main practical component of the course is the fabrication of an electrically powered mini motorbike/ mini dirt bike.
