PNBHS —

The highlight of the school week was undoubtedly the 2021 Athletics Championships. The Tū Whakahī | Pride with which young men represented their clubs was obvious, particularly in the relays and Club Marching. Being part of and representing one's Club in the Shand Shield competition is another opportunity for young men to form connections with their school and to develop relationships with their peers and staff members.

To some, the marching might appear to be an antiquated activity and certainly, it has a long history at PNBHS, both as an activity associated with the school 'cadets' and in more modern times as an event at the PNBHS Athletics Championships.   What the Club Marching competition does provide though is a rare opportunity for young men at all year levels to work together towards a common goal - it is rare to find an event in which the endeavour of the young man in Year 9 is on an equal footing with that of the young man in Year 13.  There are also many leadership opportunities for young men in Year 13 as they demonstrate, encourage and teach the younger members of their Club.

Wellbeing research in New Zealand schools has shown a link between club/house competitions and higher levels of student wellbeing.  Being part of a club helps to build connections with the school as well as relationships with peers and teachers.  The sense of belonging that this engenders is an essential component of positive wellbeing.

Another great way to create this sense of belonging and to build relationships is through involvement in our co-curricular programme.  All young men are encouraged to get involved.  Information about registering to play in a number of our winter codes - Basketball, Football, Hockey, Rugby and Table Tennis - can be found further on in this publication.  If your son is intending to play winter sport can you please encourage him to register as soon as possible as having accurate player numbers is essential for the organisation of teams.
