PNBHS —

While we were disappointed to have to make the decision to postpone the PNBHS Athletics Championships (now Wednesday, March 17), it was pleasing to be able to host a very successful day of competition on Monday for the preliminaries.  The determined effort from the vast majority of young men was commendable and, like everything one does, tells us a lot about the character of those young men.  It is always disappointing to see some young men who choose to 'opt out' on such occasions - fortunately, this is a small number.

Registrations for winter sports are now open.  We encourage all young men to be involved in our co-curricular programme so that they are able to share in the many benefits that this provides -  developing relationships with peers and staff members, positive impacts on physical and mental health and wellbeing, the development of organisational and time management skills and learning how to cope with pressure, failure and success among others.  Parents play a key role in assisting and supporting young men to be involved.  Further on in this newsletter, you will find information about registering to play Basketball, Football, Hockey, Rugby and Table Tennis for PNBHS in 2021.

Involvement in co-curricular activities helps develop many aspects of character and is fundamental to achieving our school vision Hai Whakapakari i Ngā Tamatāne Kia Purapura Tuawhiti | To Develop Educated Men of Outstanding Character, as well as gaining a practical understanding of how our school values can be 'lived':

Tū Māia | Courage - the physical and mental courage to take on an opposition team who are older and bigger; to continue to give one's best effort as the score mounts against you.

Ngākau Mahaki | Humility - learning to appreciate victory in a way that maintains the dignity of the opposition; appreciating an outstanding performance without taking away from the efforts of the rest of the team or group.

Te mahi tahi | Industry - consistently producing a determined effort at training/rehearsals and in games/performances.

Tū Rangatira | Integrity - playing within the rules and the spirit of the game; being fair and truthful; living up to the commitment we make to our teammates.

Tū Whakahī | Pride - recognising that we can be satisfied with our performance and that of our team or group while also showing humility.

Tū Whakaaute | Respect - treating the opposition, officials, teammates, coaches, managers and supporters with courtesy and good manners regardless of the outcome of the game or an official's or coach's decisions.
