PNBHS Anzac Service 2023

PNBHS - April 30, 2023

Our annual Anzac Service is one of the most important events in the school calendar. It provides us with an opportunity to remember and reflect upon the sacrifices made by earlier generations and provides some insight into the horrific impact that war had on our country.

Thank you to Scholarship History student Thomas Malone who presented the annual Anzac Address. Head Prefect Connor Giltrap and Year 9 student Benjamin Lister placed a wreath at the base of the flagpole on behalf of the current students of the school, Year 11 student Reagan Carver played the Last Post and Reveille as Deputy Head Prefect Connor Puanaki lowered and then raised the New Zealand flag, while the PNBHS Concert Band provided music for the first part of the service in the Ian Colquhoun Memorial Hall.

The Anzac Service is part of the very important link between our current students and our Old Boys community. Thank you to Old Boy Mr. Tim Costley, RNZAF, who led the service for us, a role that was fulfilled for many years by his father, former PNBHS Senior Master the late Mr. Brent Costley. Thank you also to Mr. Alan Cull, Patron of the PNBHS Old Boys Association, who, along with Mr. Evan Torrance, laid a wreath at the Gallipoli Oak on behalf of the Old Boys, and to former PNBHS Head of History Mr. Dominic King, representing the Old Boys of PNBHS, who read the Roll of Honour for World War One, and to Board of Trustees Chairperson Mr. Grant Watts, who read the Roll of Honour for World War Two and the Falklands Conflict.

When the boys move from the hall to the front lawn of the school for the laying of wreaths and playing of the Last Post and Reveille, they walk in silence through a path marked with crosses, each bearing the name, photograph and service number of one of the 203 PNBHS Old Boys and staff killed in war.
